This Week in the Woods
We are happy to see day light savings roll around, although waking up an hour late (even on a Sunday) makes me feel like the day is already half done. I like writing these blogs because I like giving people the perspective of what really goes on. Like any business owner, we don’t just get up go to our job and run a machine all day. We are always looking for ways to invest in order to grow our business, whether that be in timberland or new equipment. I started out the week with excitement over a piece of land that would be a perfect investment in standing timber and real estate. These pieces rarely come up for sale, fully wooded. But…. this real estate market is fierce and even with a full price offer we lost. Let me tell you, walking through 4 feet of snow is good for the heart muscle. I think it is time to buy some snow shoes.
I am also considering investing in a medium sized excavator with a mulching head. A mulching head can be attached to the boom of the excavator and grind stumps, wood debris, and brush which would provide an esthetically pleasing look for our landowners. I envision being able to create recreational paths through private woodlots for owners to enjoy walking, biking or snowshoeing. We are headed out again to look at the excavator but this time with the boys because looking at equipment is as good as Disney to them.
In the woods this week, we finished the job in Minot. Because we had used an old landing, there wasn’t a lot involved in the clean up, but we did lay down some wood chips which will help prevent erosion on the old landing. I think we had some happy customers because we received a delicious batch of coffee chocolate chip brownies. They always say, “the way to a man’s heart is through is stomach”. #truestory
We drove down the road to Mechanic Falls and set up shop on a great little lot right on Rt. 124. Make sure you to wave if you see us.
Luckily, at the end of the week I stumbled upon another nice woodlot to purchase so I went on another hike through 4 feet of snow to check it out. Fingers crossed they like our offer. Still no snowshoes.
