This Week in the Woods
My wife tells me I should write about what I did this week. Sounds pretty boring to me but I do what she says. So I looked back through some pictures to try to remember what the heck we did this week.
We started the week finishing up a job in New Gloucester. It was a quick little job cleaning some land for a farmer for more fields. I love working for down to earth local people, especially a farmer that is making a living through agriculture. We tend to have a lot in common. Typically we would bring out the bulldozer and smooth out the landing, but this time the landowner has more plans for excavation and stump removal, so it wasn’t necessary. Luckily, the road into the landing was still solidly frozen and didn’t require any maintenance so it was a quick move out…. on to the next job.
On Tuesday, February 19th I started to notice posted roads signs going up. That made my day. I sure love seeing those orange signs go up when it’s 5 degrees at night and 19 degrees during the day. Seems logical. I suppose it’s pretty clear how I feel about that subject so I’ll just leave that there.
The second half of the week we finished cleaning up the job in New Gloucester and moved the equipment to a new job in Minot. This time of year it is important to get over to a new job and break open the ground and let it re-freeze. We got pretty lucky to have some cold weather in order to do that. This job is a selective cut of approximately 30 acres. When we move, we send the Feller Buncher and bulldozer over to the site first in order to create a landing. The Buncher cleared a space for the landing and I smoothed it out with our little forest bulldozer. That little machine has proven to be a very useful tool in our business. I can’t say moving job sites is my favorite part of the job. It’s definitely more fun to slash trees and watch them head out to the mills, but like anything, it’s necessary in order to keep going!
Capped off the normal people week enjoying family and friends at Macs Grill in Auburn. Kids were so well behaved they got a trip to a place better than Disney and scored a nice John Deere hat. Thanks Hammond tractor, you made their day!
Now, it’s time to get out from behind a computer screen and enjoy another winter Saturday in woods where I belong.
